Knowing your target audience is the key to success as an author and a marketer. You have to know what makes your audience tick in order to write content that will resonate with them and engage them. However, I’ve found that most authors stop at demographics and superficial psychographics and call it day, believing that’s all they need to know.
However, what if I told you that there’s a treasure trove of untapped potential waiting to be discovered? In this post, I’ll explore some of the uncharted territories of audience understanding and uncover how going beyond surface-level insights can lead to remarkable growth and engagement.
The Limitations of Familiarity
Feeling confident about knowing your audience is natural, but it’s important to acknowledge the limits of this familiarity. You might be aware of their age, location, and general interests, but there’s so much more that lies beneath the surface.
Real growth comes from understanding what truly motivates your audience, what holds them back, and how they perceive your content and offerings. In other words, you need to be able to tap into the conversations they are having inside their heads.
Digging Deeper for Hidden Gems
If you want to write books that convert readers into fans and clients, if you want to create social posts that make readers feel like you’re reading their mind, if you want your email open rates to soar, then you need to be a Target Audience Trailblazer.
Imagine you are an explorer, searching for valuable insights hidden deep below the surface of your readers’ noggins? These treasures aren’t easy to see at first glance – you can’t find them in a database or survey analysis – but they hold a lot of importance.
Just like how a detective solves mysteries by paying close attention to details, you can uncover secrets that help you create effective content that grabs your audience’s attention.
If you know what to do and how to do it, you can draft your own treasure map that shows you where your audience’s hidden aspirations, desires, and fears are. This map tells you about the things they dream about, the things that worry them, and the things that make them smile. When you use this map, you can make your work even better. You can create content that touches people’s hearts and make them want to be a part of your world.
Know the Difference Between Swarovski Crystal and Colored Glass
Now that you know that you need to dig deeper to uncover the hidden gems, you need to know what gems you’re looking for and how to recognize them.
There are two sets of data you need to truly understand your readers well: Deep Demographics and Action Assumptions.
- Deep Demographics go beyond the typical “Audience Avatar” descriptors and identify the interests, preferences, habits, and fears their audience has as they relate to the author’s topic and offerings.
- Action Assumptions are beliefs your audience has that might prevent them from buying from or working with you. They form a “Belief Escalator,” which is also known as a Belief Tree or Belief Ladder.
Together, Deep Demographics and Action Assumptions go beyond what’s readily apparent. And these insights are the keys to crafting content that deeply resonates, so that it grows your list and drives conversions.
With this kind of deep understanding of your audience, you can tailor your content to align perfectly with your ideal readers’ aspirations and emotions, forging a connection that lasts.
A New Perspective
Instead of assuming you know your audience completely, consider adopting a mindset of continuous exploration. Seek to understand the nuances of their challenges, aspirations, and hesitations. Embrace the concept that uncovering hidden insights is an ongoing process that can lead to substantial rewards.
